Description of Work

Department: Administration

Division: Office of the Secretary 

Job Duties: Expose intern to the work of the DOA and state government.  Policy interns will work with and support DOA’s Policy Office within the Office of the Secretary. Interns will work on a variety of projects and learn about the work, policy priorities and management of DOA. Interns will have the opportunity to build and strengthen their professional skills, particularly in policy research, analysis, writing, organization, and interpersonal communications. 

Major Task to be Performed: An intern will have the unique opportunity to observe and interact with programs and Commissions across the department.   Interns may develop materials to enhance the public’s awareness of the Department of Administration. Policy interns will become an integral part of the department, participating in activities, attending meetings with state government officials; attending boards and commission meetings featuring external stakeholders; collaborating on policy drafts; and conducting project-specific research and outreach on a variety of issues such as environmental justice, vehicle electrification, non-public education, women’s and youth issues, Historically Underutilized Businesses, record retention, and more.  

Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: Multiple products including, but not limited to, memos and research documents, speeches and PowerPoint presentations, database management, departmental policies and correspondence documents.

Academic Majors Desired: Public Policy, Political Science, Government, Public Administration, law/pre-law will consider others.  

 

2025 State of North Carolina Internship Period: Monday, May 19 – Friday, July 25, 2025

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state. 
  • Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicant must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2025.
  • Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.
  • To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed.
  • Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.
