An internship with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting.Β 

Β Β 

The Advocacy Intern will work as part of the Advocacy department to support various activities related to legislative and policy advocacy. This position focuses on coverage of events, policy research, and support for key advocacy initiatives. This is a hybrid/remote paid internship available for Spring 2025.

We would prefer this Intern be based in the Washington, DC area, and will be expected to attend an in-person Public Policy Conference March 23-25th, 2025. Availability to attend some Hill briefings preferred. Schedule may not permit attendance at full PPC.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Event Coverage (40%)
    • Attend and cover congressional and state capital events, hearings, briefings, and coalition meetings.
    • Take detailed notes and provide summaries of key points and discussions.
    • Assist in the preparation of reports and updates based on event coverage.
  • Policy Research (30%)
    • Conduct background research on policy issues relevant to the organization’s advocacy efforts.
    • Compile and analyze data to support policy positions and advocacy strategies.
    • Assist in the preparation of policy briefs, fact sheets, and other advocacy materials.
  • Support for Advocacy Initiatives (30%)
    • Assist in the planning and execution of the Public Policy Conference, State Action Days, and August Recess activities.
    • Schedule meetings with elected officials and their staff.
    • Coordinate logistics for advocacy events and meetings.

  • Develop skills in legislative and policy research.
  • Gain experience in event coverage and reporting.
  • Enhance understanding of the legislative process and advocacy strategies.
  • Improve communication, organizational, and analytical skills.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree as a Junior or Senior in college or any year in graduate school.
  • Open to all majors, with a preference for Political Science, Public Administration, Law, Communications, or related fields.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work [X-X] weeks, [X] hours per week.
  • Access to reliable internet (required for remote or hybrid positions).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software for e-mail, document, and spreadsheet creation/management.
  • Detail-oriented and able to handle multiple tasks efficiently.

The hourly rate for internships is $15, except when noted differently above ORΒ where local minimum wage exceeds that figure, in which case the hourly rate will be the higher of the two.β€― If you are unable to be paid for this internship due to outside funding or other directives from your educational institution – please let your hiring manager know AFTER you have been identified as the final candidate.β€―Β
