Description

General Responsibilities:

  • The Associate Dean for Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (AD-JEDI) plays a critical role in fostering an inclusive and equitable environment within the medical school. This position will be responsible for developing and promoting programs that support diversity and inclusion, affirm student identities, and enhance the overall student experience. As part of a dynamic new medical school housed within an established liberal arts college, the AD-JEDI will be instrumental in creating a culture of equity and belonging.

Program Development:

  • Develop and promote programs that affirm student identity and build community among diverse student populations.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to create initiatives that address and celebrate diversity within the medical school.

Committee Oversight:

  • Oversee the Methodist University Cape Fear Valley (MCFV) JEDI Committee, ensuring effective collaboration and implementation of diversity initiatives.
  • Serve as a key leader in promoting a culture of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion across all school operations.

Resource Promotion:

  • Advocate for and promote available programs and resources to meet the diverse needs of students and faculty, ensuring accessibility and awareness.
  • Provide guidance on educationally sound and legally viable policies in support of diversity and inclusion.

Advocacy for Marginalized Students:

  • Act as an advocate for marginalized students, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are addressed within the academic environment.
  • Challenge inequitable policies and recommend solutions to promote a more inclusive community.

Data-Driven Improvement:

  • Use data to evaluate and improve policies, demonstrating unintended consequences and areas for growth.
  • Systematically collect and analyze outcome data on diversity efforts to inform future initiatives.

Collaboration for Student Experience:

  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to address issues impacting the student experience, particularly related to diversity and inclusion.
  • Communicate the experiences of all medical students to inform decision-making and policy development.

Promotion of Diversity in Medical Education:

  • Promote diversity as a means to enhance medical education and healthcare delivery, contributing to improved health outcomes in diverse communities.
  • Advise leadership on diversity trends and recommend investments in programs that support equity and inclusion.

Engagement in Scholarly Activities:

  • Engage in scholarly activities that advance diversity and inclusion practices, contributing to the body of knowledge in this critical area.
  • Present findings and insights at relevant conferences and forums to promote awareness and understanding of JEDI issues in medical education.

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • The Assistant Dean for Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion may perform other related duties as required by the Senior Associate Dean for Student Experience or the university administration.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • M.D., D.O., or Ph.D. degree, or equivalent qualification in a relevant field.
    • Demonstrated experience in promoting justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion within an academic or healthcare setting.
    • Strong knowledge of diversity and inclusion principles, policies, and best practices.
    • Experience in academic leadership roles, with a commitment to advancing equitable practices.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to effectively advocate for diverse populations.
    • Ability to analyze data and trends to inform policy decisions and program development.
    • Strong organizational and leadership skills to oversee initiatives and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
    • Commitment to fostering a culture of belonging and equity within the medical school community.
