Job Description
Based out of Las Vegas, Nevada, technicians will join the Pereira Conservation Ecology Lab research staff to conduct grant-funded field research in southeastern California and southern Nevada. We are looking for skilled observant Botany Technicians who are passionate about expanding our current understanding of Mojave Desert flora and rare plant species. The Botany Technicians will assist with multiple research efforts:
1. Monitoring of the three-corner milkvetch (Astragalus geyeri var. triquetrus) across its range for
multiple project effects including on an active solar power site.
2. Greenhouse projects involving Joshua tree (Yucca jaegeriana) seed germination, mycorrhizal fungi
interactions, seedling transplant and survivorship analysis.
3. Las Vegas bearpoppy (Arctomecon californica) ecology and restoration efforts.
4. Other research assignments as funding allows.
Required Qualifications: The successful botany technicians should be knowledgeable and thorough with excellent research, communication, and interpersonal skills. Applicants must be open to work with others that have a range of work-related experience or backgrounds (with us or other groups; with undergraduate and graduate students, early career, and professional scientists) and willing to have both learning and teaching experiences. We strongly encourage early career professionals to apply.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior botanical knowledge and field work experience specifically in the southwest region.
Conditions of Employment:
β’ Must be capable of 6β10-hour field work days in a desert environment, where conditions can change rapidly.
β’ The ability to conducting oneself in a safe and responsible manner, adhering to applicable DRI and on-site safety protocols.
β’ Valid driverβs license.
β’ The ability to hike between 3 and 15 miles carrying a 15-25 lb field pack.
β’ The ability to lift between 35 and 50 lb.
β’ Off-road driving might be necessary.
Position Time frame: Feb through June (as needed)
Hourly Rate Based on Experience: $19/hr (new) $20/hr (intermediate) $22/hr (experienced)
