The person in this position will report directly to the Laboratory Program Coordinator. Basic functions are: assist with the preparation, set-up, and upkeep of labs in the Department of Biology, assist students with day-to-day laboratory activities as determined by the Laboratory Program Coordinator, assist with administering lab quizzes, exams, and assessments, assist with grading and submitting grades to instructor and/or Laboratory Program Coordinator.
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
Has responsibility or authority which is limited to the direction of student assistants assigned to the course(s).
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include Chair, Associate Chair, Office Manager, Laboratory Program Coordinator, Laboratory Coordinators, other Laboratory Assistants, Administrative Assistant, and other staff.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Participate in the execution of Department of Biology course exercises (both virtual and in-person)
Relay direction from Laboratory Program Coordinator to unit or team involved in course laboratory exercise delivery, and execution
Work with student assistants, as directed
Assist with preparation of assessments for laboratory course exercises
Collaborate with Laboratory Program Coordinator, course instructors, and other lab assistants about laboratory exercise content and student outcomes
Collaborate with team to assist staff, students, and others to provide technical advice
Problem solving assistance, and answers to question
Performs other duties as assigned or required
CORE COMPETENCIES:
Have proficiency and experience in using related software applications to perform a variety of project assignments (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas, Zoom)
Develop and maintain proficiency in the utilization of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Knowledge of basic biological laboratory procedures and practices, and ability to quickly learn new procedures.
Better than average competency in skills in basic arithmetic, grammar, and spelling.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff, and students.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Master of Science in a biological science preferred, but minimum of BS in a biological science required.
Course experience should at a minimum include in-person laboratories in introductory biology, genetics, and molecular biology.
Additional experience, including laboratory research, is preferred.
