How You’ll Contribute

The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project on its campus (called Base Camp), which will be completed in 2026. Components of the new guest experience will include a state-of-the-art pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk-through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and exciting new event space. A fully sustainable, on-brand hotel may also be built and operated by a third party on the campus. The capstone of the renovation is a one-of-a-kind nighttime experience in the courtyard.

The Operations team provides an outstanding experience to everyone who comes to our headquarters, including visitors, donors, and staff. We are focused on planning for and operations of visitor experiences and campus-wide operations. The team is responsible for providing services that all staff rely on, including cleaning, mail and packages, office space management, building engineering, interactive technology, and sustainability.

Reporting to the Mailroom Supervisor, the Printing Services Specialist will play a pivotal role in overseeing and optimizing our printing operations, ensuring that they run smoothly, efficiently, and with a focus on quality control. This position will involve managing print production, coordinating with vendors, overseeing projects, and ensuring the proper functioning of printing equipment.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include:

  • Manages all print orders, oversees preparing files and executing on printing projects. Manages the production, printing and finishing of projects. Operate production equipment including digital copiers, cutters/trimmers, binders, laminators, passport photo equipment while meeting safety and quality standards. (20%)
  • Ensures convenience copiers are working properly, checking for minor technical issues via inspections. Clearing paper jams, replacing toners and drum cartridges etc. and notifying technicians of specific problems. Supervising maintenance and upgrades to several pieces of complex equipment. (20%)
  • Oversee inventory management of print equipment, systems and supplies. Ensures all print areas are fully stocked and equipment working properly. (20%)
  • Keeps in touch with the status and progress of work, estimates and reports on expected time of completion of work and makes day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities. (20%)
  • Trains and coaches colleagues to ensure proper printing procedures and regulations are used for printing, preparing and delivering print requests correctly. (20%)

Minimum Years and Types of Experience

3-5 years of hands-on experience in digital printing with Canon related types of equipment. Other component equipment includes the Perfect Binder and a Triumph commercial paper cutter. Experience printing various documents such as letterhead, envelopes, business name tags, flyers, brochures, note cards, award certificates, calendars, mailing labels, passport photos, booklets, as well as book binding using Fiery software applications.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Experienced in the printing field; in-house print experience, providing services to internal staff is a plus.

  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities, detail-oriented i with the ability to rapidly learn and pivot with the Society’s initiatives and directives.

  • Ability to communicate with excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal customers and external vendors and resources.

  • Knowledge of Adobe suite, Microsoft Office suite, Imposition Wizard and other printing related applications.

  • Ability to take ownership and proper initiative and follow-through with projects.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The hourly range salary for this position is $25.58 - $26.93.

Job Designation

Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must be at Base Camp every day to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present onsite some of the time to meet looming deadlines or to get work done and may require a unique schedule. As such, this category has been revised to provide maximum flexibility depending on what’s required for each individual role. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work.
